Artwork Angela Merici
Angela Merici (Desenzano del Garda, 21 March 1470, 1474 or 1475 - Brescia, 27 January 1540) was an Italian Catholic religious. She was the founder of the Ursuline Order in 1535, the first order within the Catholic Church to focus on the education of girls. The Order of the Ursulines, which she founded, is still active worldwide in the education of women and girls.
She became seriously ill in 1539 and died on 25 January 1540. The next day her body was transferred to the San Afra Church in Brescia where she was interred amid great public interest. After the Second World War, this church was named Sant'Angela Merici. Merici's remains can still be seen there in a glass shrine. In 1768, Angela Merici was beatified by Pope Clement XIII and in 1807 she was canonised by Pope Pius VII; her feast day is 27 January.
