The Bundertjes is the name of a nature reserve and hiking area to the north of downtown Helmond and to the east of the (old) South William’s Canal in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The area is also referred to as “The Wissen”, another word for withy-ticket.
Nature reserve and hiking area
This green zone of about 100 hectares consists of a swamp forest, wicker, meadows, some agriculture, reed land, brushwood, brooks, a skating rink and allotment gardens. There is also a biological market garden with the same. In the past, there were plenty of swampy meadows and grasslands next to the old Aa and the Bakel Aa. Nowadays, only The Bundertjes nature reserve is left.
The old Aa, a meandering brook, has radically changed its course as a result of normalization, but in The Bundertjes, it still follows its old, meandering course. To the north of The Bundertjes, the old course of the Bakel Aa has been dug out again and renamed to The Golden Aa.
Nature garden The Robbert is located in The Bundertjes.
Access to the garden is free on Saturday mornings between 9 and 12 AM and on every third Sunday of the month in summer between 1 and 5 PM.
There is also a hiking route with paths and bridges through flowery grasslands, swamps, open water and alder-thickets.
