In memory of those who lost their lives in the war'. That is what the stone says at the memorial on the Koppelstraat, next to the town hall in Beek en Donk. Besides the stone, the monument consists of a large bell, attached to a stone plate. The annual commemoration of the dead in Laarbeek, on 4 May, is always held at this monument. The stone, in which the text is carved, is not just a stone. During the Second World War, the Donk bridge across the canal was destroyed. One of the pillars was preserved and it now contains the text. After the destruction of the bridge, the pillar stood for a long time at Kapelstraat, before moving to the field near the History Room in Beek en Donk around 1985. In 1995 it was made into a real memorial. The then director of the municipal works, Wim Willems, came up with the design of the stone slab behind the pillar, with the clock attached. The clock also comes from Beek en Donk. It previously hung in the Sint Jozef study house. In Beek en Donk, this building is better known as huize Leefdael. From 1938 to 1965, this was a priest training college of 'the Oblates of St Francis'.
